CleanOutlook.com supplies your new
logo design package in a variation of standard file format types and
sizes that should cover 99.9% of scenarios for all printing and web
needs
Many types of interchangeable
graphic file formats exist on the market today. Typically, the
average person will not be able to open their logo files with the
extensions AI, EPS and PSD. Each of these three file types require a
special software program used by designers, printers, and
promotional product and signage manufacturers. Our preferred design
tools are Adobe Illustrator and Adobe PhotoShop. In order for your
logo to render properly across a wide variety of applications, the
correct and compatible file format must be utilized.
Many times, we get a call or an
email from a frantic client worried that they cannot open one of the
provided files or that they do not know what the file type is for.
For your convenience, a brief explanation of the different file
extensions you may come across when working with a graphic designer,
what each of them stand for and how the file format is used is
listed below.
In your logo package you will
find several folders. Here is a breakdown of those logo file
formats, and what you will use those formats for.
Printers will love having your
package, as well as sign companies, banner companies, publications,
tshirt companies, specialty item printers, ad designers, publishers,
etc. Just give them the AI vector file if you're not sure which
format they need. This will help your project proceed quick.
Your logo is the most important
graphic element in which you will invest for your business. You
should own the logo in many file formats. Having a library of logo
files will enable you to send vendors the types of files they need
(for example, other designers, printers, or other service
providers).
JPEG files-(Joint
Photographic Experts Group)
JPEG as it is often referred
to (RGB Color) – 300dpi .JPEG’s are the most common image format
you will find on the web. They are compressed so they load
quickly on websites. JPG file is the one most commonly used for
home/office printing in applications like Word or PowerPoint.
When using programs such as this, the final output is often
printed using your inkjet/laser jet printer.
In order to insure that your
logo looks its best, the .JPG files provided is set to
72dpi, & 300 dots per inch or "dpi" - which is a high
resolution image. We provide three sizes because a .JPG file
is resolution dependent. This means that it can loose its
crisp appearance when scaled too large or too small. The
sizes supplied are usually sufficient for most things you
will need to do with your logo. .JPG files are unable to
support transparency. Your JPEG folder will not only contain
a 300dpi folder, we also include your logo jpegs files in
72dpi in three sizes. (3 sizes = Normal, Medium and Small)
JPEG Grayscale
Grayscale – 300dpi. This
file type is provided so that you can seek trademark
status for your logo. Most trademark organizations will
only accept images that are in grayscale.
Perfect for:
Home/Office printing- Web Design- Importing in to
Microsoft Office applications like Word, PowerPoint,
Excel, Access etc....
GIF-(Graphics
Interchange Format)
GIF images are the format you
will use the most for website banners and uploading to the web.
These are not recommended for printing. Gif images are great for
creating very low resolution files for your website. They
support transparency, which is great. Transparency allows you to
place the gif over any color background or even photos, and you
won’t see a border or background in the image. All you will see
is the icon. You typically use a gif for simple logos, icons, or
symbols. Using a gif for photos is not recommended, because gifs
are limited to 256 colors. (3 sizes = Normal, Medium and Small)
Your GIF folder will also
include a TRANS folder containing three sizes as well; Normal,
Medium, Small.
PNG-(Portable Network Graphics)
RGB Color – 72 dpi. PNG files
are a fairly new arrival on the scene. It is a web site file
format supported now by most web browsers. The beauty of this
format is that the quality of finish is usually high. The PNG
file format also resizes much better than Gif files. Request
this format on the order form should you require it. These just
as gifs, are for use on the web and are not high enough
resolution for quality printing.
.PNG files scale better than .GIF files, and they can contain up
to 32 bits of color including transparency. They are useful in
programs such as Word and PowerPoint.
BMP-(The
Windows Bitmap)
BMP files are image files
within the Microsoft Windows operating system. In fact, it
was at one point one of the few image formats. These files
are large and uncompressed, but the images are rich in
color, high in quality, simple and compatible in all Windows
OS and programs. BMP files are also called raster or paint
images.
BMP files are made of
millions and millions of dots called ‘pixels’, with different
colors and arrangements to come up with an image or pattern. It
might an 8-bit, 16-bit or 24-bit image. Thus when you make a BMP
image larger or smaller, you are making the individual pixels
larger, and thus making the shapes look fuzzy and jagged.
BMP files are not great and
not very popular. Being oversized, bitmap files are not what you
call ‘web friendly’, nor are they compatible in all platforms
and they do not scale well.
TIFF-Tagged Image
File Format
A widely supported file
format that works in just about any program. A TIFF is of higher
quality than JPG or GIF, but not vector-formatted. TIFF's are a
higher resolution image and suitable for basic printing. If you
will be making business cards or stationery in either Microsoft
Publisher, Word or Works you can 'Insert' your TIFF file for a
cleaner look and better printing of your finished project. Tif
file (CMYK Color) – 300 dpi high resolution (dpi means dots per
inch.
The tif file is for printing on a
lithographic printing press. The CMYK color stands for the four
colors that are used in “Process Printing”. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow
and the K actually stands for Black. This file format is often
requested by print shops. This is one of many file formats that a
printer can request.
If you can open this file
format on your PC you will often see that the colors are totally
different to the other logo files we send you. This is because
your computer monitor and often your home/office printer too
uses RGB color. RGB color stands for Red, Green, Blue. Your PC
does not have the correct filters to read CMYK color. This is
entirely normal and when printed on a lithographic printing
press the colors will print correct. (Because a lithographic
printing press can print many more variations of the color
spectrum you may notice a slight difference in the end product
compared to what you would be able to print on a home office
printer).
PDF-(Portable
Document Format)
(RGB) PDF's are
printer files meaning they are a digital copy of
your image. Some print shops will ask for these.
PDF stands for
Portable Document Format and is an image format used
to display documents and graphics correctly, no
matter the device, application, operating system or
web browser. At its core, PDF files have a powerful
vector graphics foundation, but can also display
everything from raster graphics to form fields to
spreadsheets. Because it is a near universal
standard, PDF files are often the file format
requested by printers to send a final design into
production.
PSD-(Adobe PhotoShop
Document)
(RGB) – 300 dpi.
This file format is used by professional designers
and is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop.
You need Adobe Photoshop to open this file type. We
supply you with your logo psd format with a
transparent background too, it is great for use by a
professional web designer. If you have future web
graphics created for your website or marketing you
should provide your webmaster with your layered, or
transparent logo file. Use your PSD logo format when
you need to preserve your logo file layers,
transparency, adjustment layers, masks, clipping
paths, layer styles, blending modes, vector text and
shapes, etc. You must have Adobe Photoshop in order
to open this file.
You will receive
three psd logo files; layered, flattened, flattened
transparent.

FAVICON
Upload the
generated file ("favicon.ico") to your site. Verify
it's there by typing http://mysite.com/favicon.ico
in the browser's location, where "mysite.com" is
your site's address.
Next, insert the
below code in the HEAD section of your pages, at the
very least, your site's main index page:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon"
href="/favicon.ico">
That's it! Note
that your favicon may not appear immediately after
you've completed the above two steps. In fact, it
may take a few days, and in IE, sometimes the
favicon will disappear from time to time due to a
browser bug.
Standard Transparent
File Formats
Many clients are
surprised when viewing their logo design choices
that we send that the JPG logo files do not have
transparent backgrounds. The reason for this is that
only certain file formats can support transparency.
JPG files can not. We do however supply a few
transparent file formats with your finished logo
package.
What is a Favicon?
These logo file
extensions are the PSD, EPS, BMP, GIF's and the PNG
file. The PSD and EPS formats however require
special software to work with. The PSD requires
Adobe Photoshop and the EPS requires Adobe
Illustrator. The PNG file requires no specialist
software and should open in your web browser.
That's it! Note
that your favicon may not appear immediately after
you've completed the above two steps. In fact, it
may take a few days, and in IE, sometimes the
favicon will disappear from time to time due to a
browser bug.
